| Topics included are: representing Ireland in film and documentary; sociology of Irish media; television and the representation of gender, ethnicity and class; contemporary Irish film and sociolinguistics of Irish television. | |

| Course Title: | Law in Ireland |
| Course Description: | |
| Provides a concise but comprehensive overview of the Irish legal system. The course is divided into four sections: (i) institutions of the Irish state (ii) Irish and European law (iii) criminal law (iv) law-making and/or legal practice in Ireland. Will include a visit to the Irish Parliament or Courts in Dublin. No prior study of law is required. | |

| Three interrelated topics provide comprehensive insight into the evolution of modern Irish society: “The History of Modern Ireland” addresses the origins of political violence in Ireland and the impact of the Great Famine; “Irish Folklore and Folklife” explores key aspects of traditional Irish culture during the critical years of social transition and modernization; and “Irish Literature in English” concentrates on Irish writers and their output during the same period as covered in the other two topics. | |
