Overview

Spend a semester or academic year in the elegant, charming city of Salzburg, Austria, with AIFS! Choose from a variety of course options with credit awarded by Fairfield University. Salzburg is the ideal location for students who love the outdoors. From Salzburg you can easily reach the mountains, meadows and lakes of the Austrian Alps.

Students must apply for a visa with the Austrian Consulate. Upon acceptance, AIFS will provide instructions and the necessary official documents required to obtain a student visa; however, students must contact the Austrian Consulate directly for the appropriate visa forms.

Academics

AIFS Abroad offers a unique global educational experience for students on this program, with the following academic options available:

The AIFS Global Education Center in Salzburg is located in a building complex which includes doctors, offices, restaurants, cafes and shops.

Students will take classes at the GEC and during their breaks they can relax or work in the common area.

The Program Director and Academic Director are available to help students adjust to life in Salzburg and provide a support system and a friendly and familiar face. Free Wi-Fi and a computer is available for student use/printing in the GEC.

Fairfield University

Academic credit for the AIFS Salzburg program is awarded by Fairfield University. Fairfield University is a private Jesuit university founded in 1942 in Fairfield, Connecticut, well known for their commitment to international education. Fairfield is a fully accredited university and member of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. In 2020 Fairfield and AIFS partnered to develop a school of record relationship that will allow academic credit to be available for both Fairfield and non-Fairfield students. The Salzburg course syllabi and faculty credentials are reviewed and approved by Fairfield University.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

Living Abroad

REsidence Hall

For students who prefer a more independent living situation, the residence option is ideal. Housing will be in shared rooms in a residence hall with access to cooking facilities. The student residence will include:

  • Double room shared with another AIFS student
  • Shared bathroom
  • Access to communal facilities including a kitchen and study room
  • Residences located throughout Salzburg
  • Kitchen supplies and bed linens
  • Coin-operated laundry (laundry costs are the responsibility of the student)

Internet access is included in all AIFS housing in Salzburg.

Homestay

The best way to immerse yourself in the language and culture of Austria. Many students who choose this option consider it to be the most rewarding aspect of their time abroad. The homestay will be in shared rooms in a private home with access to cooking facilities. The homestay will include:

  • Single or double room sharing with another AIFS student
  • Shared bathroom and kitchen
  • Homestays located throughout Salzburg
  • Kitchen supplies and bed linens

Geography

Salzburg is a city in central Austria, at the northern edge of the Alps. It has a population of approximately 158,000 people, which makes it the fourth-biggest city of Austria.

Culture

Home to Mozart and the Sound of Music, Salzburg is one of the most renowned and inspiring cities in Europe. It has an active classical and contemporary theater and music scene and hosts the famous Salzburg Festival.

Architecture

Salzburg has one of the best-preserved old town centre full of beautiful baroque architecture which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also home to Europe’s oldest restaurant, St. Peter Stiftskeller which was founded in 803 CE.

Katharina Edtmayer

Katharina is a native Austrian who grew up outside of Salzburg. She initially pursued a diploma in interior design before she started work for the world’s largest home furnishing company as a manager. She has lived and worked in Australia, Switzerland, and Vienna. Katharina loves to meet new people and is happy to host international experiences for others. She looks forward to welcoming you to Salzburg!

AIFS in Salzburg Academic Director, Academic Year and Semester Programs

Raphaela Behounek

Raphaela has worked as a teacher and tutor for English as a second language and knows the struggles of studying abroad and learning a foreign language from both a teacher and a student perspective. She initially joined AIFS as a lecturer for Literature and is excited to welcome students in Salzburg as Academic Director.

The Academic Director provides academic advice, handles communication within the GEC and with home Universities.

In addition to day trips and excursions, a cultural calendar of activities and social events is included in your program fee. These activities will include both typical tourist sites and attractions and lesser known places which take advantage of the expert knowledge of our local AIFS staff and give you a more authentic and insightful view of Austrian life. Typical activities may include:

  • Guided city tour
  • Tour of 900-year-old Werfen Castle
  • Hellbrunn Palace and Trick Water Fountains
  • Soccer or hockey match featuring Salzburg’s Red Bull Teams
  • Austrian cooking class
  • Pastry seminar
  • Mozart dinner concert
  • Austrian Christmas Markets
  • Dachstein Ice Caves or Hallstatt

You may be asked to pay a small supplementary fee for some events.

Salzburg is the ideal location for students who love the outdoors. From Salzburg you can easily reach the mountains, meadows and lakes of the Austrian Alps. In the winter you can enjoy some of the finest downhill and cross-country skiing in the world. The world-class ski areas of Kitzbühel and St. Anton are within easy reach. Other excellent resorts are easily accessible for half-day or day trips. In warmer weather you can climb, hike, raft, sail or windsurf locally.

Maximize your opportunities to develop your German language skills outside the classroom by taking part in a language exchange with a local. Students of any level can participate and as well as improving your German it’s a great way to make friends and learn firsthand about the Austrian way of life in a relaxed atmosphere. 

Excursions

This program offers a range of day trips and excursions that will take you outside Salzburg and deepen your social, historical and cultural understanding of Austria.

Spend a day in the heart of the Austrian Alps. Guided walking tour with free time to explore the late-medieval Altstadt (Old Town). Includes round-trip transportation.

Social identity & access

One of the best things you can do before departure is enter into the journey knowing that your time abroad will be unique to this experience.   • **** AIFS Abroad offers visa processing services to applicants who enroll into the program by this date. All other applicants who enroll after this date will be responsible for securing their own visa with guidance from AIFS Abroad.

Optional Flight Package

Participants can select an optional transportation package for all AIFS Abroad programs that includes a round-trip flight from 25 U.S gateways and airport transfers to and from campus. Participants who choose to book their own flights will be responsible for connecting with the group at the program location and will need to make their own ground transportation arrangements from the airport.

Below are fees by departure city based on average historical costs and subject to change. If you select this option on your application, the total flight package price will be confirmed approximately one month prior to departure. Your program fee is guaranteed, and the optional flight package is an additional fee. Please note that once we have finalized the pricing for your flights the cost may change, and you will be responsible for making the additional payment if you want to participate in the flight package. Your program advisor will be in touch should there be any changes in the price of your flights.
