Academics

AIFS Abroad offers a unique global educational experience for students on this program, with the following academic options available:

This program is offered through the AIFS London Global Education Center (GEC). You will study in Kensington, one of the most picturesque and safest areas of central London. Within walking distance of half a dozen museums and three Royal parks, Kensington provides easy access to shopping, sports and entertainment. Running, horseback riding and boating are available in Hyde Park.

Academic credit for the London program is awarded by Fairfield University. Fairfield University is a private Jesuit university founded in 1942 in Fairfield, Connecticut, well known for their commitment to international education. Fairfield is a fully accredited university and member of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

In 2020 Fairfield and AIFS partnered to develop a school of record relationship that will allow academic credit to be available for both Fairfield and non-Fairfield students.

Course syllabi and faculty credentials are reviewed and approved by Fairfield University.

The summer school at the AIFS London Global Education Center (GEC) is divided into two sessions of four weeks each. Students take one or two 3-credit courses per session for a maximum of 6 credits. Courses on each session are divided into two streams with students able to select one course from each stream.

Most courses utilize field trips and on-site teaching to support classroom lectures to make this a truly experiential learning program. You will need to budget for incidental costs in connection with these field trips, even if the course description does not specify an amount for expenses.

The programs run consecutively and you can combine both for a longer stay in London and more credits.

AIFS in London Director, Summer Program

Heather Lees

Heather Lees

My love of travel began at an early age from moving around to different U.S. Naval bases and family road trips, to visiting family in the Philippines and studying abroad in the UK and Shanghai, China. After graduating from university in the U.S., I began a career in higher education, starting out in Residence Life and student activities before transitioning into international education. I have lived in the UK, on and off, for nearly 14 years (I am eligible for British citizenship!) and love to highlight all the UK has to offer. While I am mostly found indoors baking and crocheting, some of my favourite trips with students have been to national parks here in the UK… from ghyll scrambling in the Lake District to kayaking in the Brecon Beacons. I am a Mental Health First Aider and always happy to lend an ear.

The Program Director provides academic advice, introduces you to the community and handles communication with the University.

Learning does not begin or end in the classroom. To help you get a true taste of British life and culture, the AIFS staff organize an active social and cultural program during your time in London.

A guided city tour is included in the program fee – see Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey and the Tower of London and get those photos you always wanted.

Other events are offered which are subsidized from student fees so students pay a much lower rate than they would if they bought tickets directly from local theaters and tour agencies. Previous activities have included:

  • Walking tours such as Black London, Street Art and Harry Potter
  • Sporting events
  • Day trips such as Bath and Stonehenge, Bristol, Greenwich, Oxford, Stratford Upon Avon and Brighton
  • River boat cruise along the Thames
  • A trip on the London Eye
  • Theater performances such as Wicked, Matilda, Les Misérables, and Hamilton
  • Meals such as traditional afternoon tea or fish and chips

Excursions

This program offers a range of day trips and excursions that will take you outside London and deepen your social, historical and cultural understanding of England. Previous excursions have included:

The second visit of the day will be to the National Trust site of Stourhead, which is a beautiful 18th century landscape garden with lakeside walks, grottoes, classical temples and Stourhead House, a mansion with a wonderful library and art collection.

Social identity & access

One of the best things you can do before departure is enter into the journey knowing that your time abroad will be unique to this experience. The resources, community, and support available to you when abroad will likely be different as well. In order to help you prepare for your experience, we have compiled many resources about social identity and access in specific locations abroad. Your program staff will also provide you with more details pre-departure and during orientation.
