Homestay

The best way to immerse yourself in the language and culture of Spain; many students choosing this option find that it is the most rewarding part of their time abroad.

Shared Apartment

Share an apartment with other AIFS Abroad students. Apartments are centrally located in buildings occupied by local Spanish people.

• Single room
• Shared kitchen, bathroom and living room
• Television and washing machine
• Cleaned on a weekly basis
• Apartments may be co-ed

Optional Student Residence

For an additional fee, you can also choose to live in a student residence with Spanish and other international students. The residence is located a short walk from the AIFS Abroad office.

• $1900 supplement in Fall 2025 or $2,500 in Spring 2026
• Double room with bathroom
• Weekly laundry service
• Air conditioner/heater unit
• Includes 3 meals per day Monday through Saturday
• Single rooms available for a supplement of $2,300 in Fall 2025 or $2,900 in Spring 2026

Spaces in the student residence are limited so students who want this option are advised to apply early.

Internet access is included in all AIFS Abroad housing in Granada.

Language

Spanish is the official language in Granada.

Architecture

Granada is one of Spain’s most beautiful and historic cities. Eight centuries of Moorish presence left an architectural legacy including the Alhambra palace-fortress, the Albaicín neighborhood (UNESCO World Heritage Sites) as well as the 16^th century Cathedral.

¡Hola! I have been working with visiting students in Granada since 2007. I studied at the university and am very familiar with student life here in Granada. I also spent a year studying abroad in England which gave me an understanding of how to adjust to living in a different culture. My job is to help facilitate your immersion into the Spanish culture; ensuring your time abroad is a fun and safe learning experience. I love watching how students change during their time here. Upon arrival, you will continually ask questions. By the end of the program you will be independent, confident and knowledgeable citizens of the world and teaching me things I didn’t know! The AIFS Abroad office is located in Puerta Real, the very center of Granada. Drop by and tell me about something wonderful you have discovered in my favorite city!

In addition to day trips and excursions, a cultural calendar of weekly activities and social events is included in your program fee. These activities will include both typical tourist sites and attractions and lesser known visits which take advantage of the expert knowledge of our local AIFS Abroad staff and give you a more authentic and insightful view of life in Spain. Typical activities, tours and visits may include:

• Welcome event
• Granada’s Islamic Heritage: guided tour of the Albaicin, the city’s historic Arabic quarter
• Tour of the Cathedral and Royal Chapel
• Soccer and volleyball games
• Walks to Sacromonte district
• Arabic baths
• Hiking in the Sierra Nevada mountains
• Farewell Event: Flamenco show and dinner

You may be asked to pay a small supplementary fee for some events.

This program offers a range of day trips and excursions that will take you outside Granada and deepen your social, historical and cultural understanding of Spain. Previous excursions have included:

Alhambra and Generalife Gardens (Spain)

La Alpujarra (Fall Only) (Spain)

Ronda (Spring Only) (Spain)

Guided tour of the 17th century Plaza de Toros. Includes round-trip transportation.

Gibraltar, Seville & Córdoba (Spain)
3 Days
Estimated fee: 535*
Locally guided tours of the Rock of Gibraltar and surrounding points of interest, Seville and the Guadalquivir River, the Parque de María Luisa, the Plaza de España, Christoper Columbus’ tomb, the Alcázar of Seville, Córdoba’s Jewish quarter, La Mezquita and more. Includes round-trip transportation, accommodations, entrance fees, daily breakfast and dinner.

Morocco
3 Days
Estimated fee: $625*
Visit the north of Morocco exploring 4 of the country’s most picturesque and beautiful cities – Tangier, Tetouan, Chef-Chaouen and the lovely white-washed coastal town of Asilah. Guided tours of the medinas, the Plaza Moulay El Mehdi, Plaza Hassan I and the Royal Palace and visits to the walls, Cape Spartel and the caves of Hercules. Includes round trip transportation (bus and ferry), hotel accommodation, breakfasts, most lunches and most dinners, Tour Manager and local English-speaking guide and excursions as described above. Accompanied by AIFS Abroad staff throughout.
*Non-U.S. citizens may need to arrange a visa to visit Morocco before travelling to Spain; students are responsible for checking visa requirements.

Madrid (Spain)
3 Days
Estimated fee: $545*
Locally guided tours of the Prado Museum, the Royal Palace, La Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, and the Paseo de la Castellana. Bike ride through Retiro Park. Includes round-trip transportation, hotel accommodation, entrance fees, daily breakfasts and group meal. 
*A minimum enrollment of 15 students is required for the tour to run.
